Led by Nicholas Martin, whose background combines Highland tailoring with an MA in Scottish history, Highland Outfitters offer two private experiences designed to explore your Scottish family history and heritage. From tracing your origins through historical records to discovering the story behind tartan and Highland dress, each appointment offers a personal insight into the history and traditions connected to your family.
Full Archival Research
£195 per person Working from what you can tell us about your family records beforehand, Highland Outfitters draw on historical records, archives and genealogical sources to trace your origins and migratory history. This in-depth experience is delivered as a private talk, accompanied by a detailed family history document, allowing you discover more about where your family came from and the story behind your Scottish heritage.

Highland Heritage Talk
An in-depth talk exploring Scotland’s changing story, including the history of tartan and the origins and emergence of Highland dress. The experience is woven with clan and family names, and, where known, your own, offering a fascinating insight into the traditions and heritage connected to your Scottish ancestry.

From Research to Wardrobe
Every name, clan link and tartan uncovered through the research can be woven into your fitting, creating a truly personal connection between your family history and your finished garment. This could include a kilt, tweed jacket, or bespoke Highland dress, a sash or tailored outfit for ladies, allowing your Scottish story to become part of something made especially for you.
